The Story.

Over the years Tim has operated on over four thousand pairs of hands. “Everyone’s hands are different,” he says, “which is part of the beauty and fascination of the job. There are patterns you can recognize, the anatomy of the hand is of course the same and yet there are myriad subtle differences.” He’s re-planted fingers, removed fingers, repaired tendons and replaced joints – the full list of different procedures he undertakes is vast. The skill, dexterity and finesse needed to operate on the body’s most complex mechanical and neural system is considerable.

“You have to handle the surgery with kid gloves, the work needs to be exceedingly gentle as the hand is remarkably intricate and highly innervated.”

The hand is your first point of contact with the outside world, it catches you when you fall, and from the lightest touch to the bluntest blow is your ultimate multi-tool. Losing any part of it can be devastating, which makes being able to repair it so rewarding.”
