The Story.
Tom Kennedy, outside his bakery in Guildford where he works, in a break between preparing French sticks and making cheese straws. Tom has been a baker for nearly half a century, from his apprenticeship in patisseries at the Grosvenor House at the age of sixteen, to a Mess Sergeant in the army in Egypt, to Harrods. His bread has flown high with Qantas and sailed far with Canberra. His finger’s not in a loaf somewhere, he lost the end of it in a bicycle accident when he was twelve. He hasn’t taken a single day off sick in 49 years. He says - “If everyone had worked as hard as me we’d still have an empire”.
